African Rock Python

Suidelike Luislang · Python natalensis

Africa's largest snake, a non-venomous giant that can grow over five metres long. It is not poisonous but kills prey by wrapping around and squeezing it, then swallowing it whole. Patterned in blotches of brown, olive and gold, it loves water and sun. A python can eat a whole antelope or warthog and then rest for weeks while it slowly digests.

How to identify it

A very thick, blotchy brown-and-gold snake with no hood, much heavier-bodied than any venomous snake here.

Where to see it in Kruger

Lives near rivers, dams and rocky areas across the park, sometimes seen basking on riverbanks or crossing roads, but generally hard to spot.

Did you know

After swallowing a big meal like an impala, it may not need to eat again for several months!
