African Snipe
Afrikaanse Snip · Gallinago nigripennis
A superbly camouflaged wader, streaked and barred in browns to vanish against marsh grass. Its very long bill probes deep into soft mud for worms. Usually unseen until it explodes from underfoot in a zigzag flight, in display it dives steeply so its spread tail feathers make a strange bleating hum.
