Black Mamba

Swartmamba · Dendroaspis polylepis

Africa's longest venomous snake, reaching up to four metres. Despite its name its body is grey-brown; the 'black' is the inky-dark inside of its mouth. It is fast, alert and shy, and its bite is highly dangerous, so it must always be given space and respect. Left alone, it would much rather flee than fight, and it hunts birds and small mammals.

Where to see it in Kruger

Hides in rocky outcrops, termite mounds and hollow trees in savanna across the park; rarely seen, as it usually slips away long before people are close.
