Common Eland

Eland · Taurotragus oryx

The eland is the largest antelope in the world, with big bulls weighing as much as a small car. Despite their size they are surprisingly good jumpers. They are fawn to grey with faint white stripes, and both sexes have straight, tightly spiralled horns. A loose flap of skin called a dewlap hangs from the throat, and bulls make a clicking sound as they walk.

How to identify it

Its huge ox-like body with a throat dewlap and short spiral horns dwarfs every other antelope in the park.

Look for its tracks

Huge round cloven hoof, almost cattle-sized; the biggest antelope track — broad halves, blunt tips.

Where to see it in Kruger

Uncommon and roaming widely, most often seen on open plains in the central and far-northern regions.

Did you know

The eland is the world's biggest antelope, yet it can still leap over a two-metre fence from a standstill.
