Crowned Lapwing

A noisy brown plover of dry open ground, named for the white ring that circles its black cap like a crown. It has long red legs and a red-based black bill. It runs and pauses to snatch insects, and screams loudly when an intruder, person or predator, comes near its nest on the bare earth.

How to identify it

A brown plover with long red legs and a black cap crossed by a white ring, like a halo around the crown.

Listen for its call

A loud, ringing 'kreeep-kreeep' alarm, noisy day and night over open ground.

Where to see it in Kruger

Common on dry, short grassland and open bare ground all over the park, not tied to water.
