A medium woodpecker with a green-gold back and streaky underparts, often located by its harsh drawn-out call. It hitches up trunks and branches probing for ants and beetle larvae. Widespread in mixed and riverine woodland, it is a year-round Kruger resident.

Greenish back with golden-yellow tail shafts and streaked (not barred) underparts; male has a full red crown.
