Greater Kestrel

A larger, paler kestrel of open country, finely barred all over and marked by its distinctive pale eye when seen up close. It hunts insects, lizards and small mammals from a perch or while hovering, and in Kruger is most likely in the more open savanna areas.

How to identify it

Pale, heavily barred kestrel with a whitish eye at close range; bigger and paler than the rufous Rock Kestrel.

Listen for its call

A grating, repeated 'kee-ker-rik' near the nest.

Where to see it in Kruger

Scarce in open, lightly wooded grassland, often perched on a dead tree or hovering over open ground.
