How to identify it

A small, sculptural succulent shrub with a swollen grey trunk and few thick branches. In winter the bare stems are topped with showy pink-and-white flowers with crinkled red-edged petals.

Where to see it in Kruger

In hot, low-lying areas on sandy and rocky ground, more common in the northern and eastern parts of the park.

Did you know

The whole plant is toxic, with a milky latex full of cardiac glycosides that was traditionally used to make arrow and fish poison.
