Levaillant's Cuckoo

A larger cousin of the Jacobin Cuckoo, crested and pied but with a finely streaked throat. It specialises in parasitising the Arrow-marked Babbler, whose chattering flocks raise its young. A summer breeding visitor, it retreats to tropical Africa for the winter months.

How to identify it

Like the Jacobin Cuckoo but larger with a streaked throat and longer crest; parasitises babblers.

Listen for its call

A loud, bubbling "che-che-che" that ends in a whistle.

Where to see it in Kruger

Dense woodland and thickets in summer, near babbler flocks.
