Little Grebe

A small, rounded waterbird, often called the dabchick, that bobs on the surface and dives again and again to catch little fish and insects underwater. In the breeding season it shows rich chestnut cheeks and a bright pale spot at the bill base, and gives a loud whinnying trill from the reeds.

How to identify it

A tiny, tail-less, fluffy-rumped waterbird that dives constantly; in breeding dress it has chestnut cheeks and a pale gape spot.
