Long-crested Eagle

A medium-sized dark eagle with an unmistakable wispy crest, often seen sitting patiently on a high perch. It feeds mainly on rodents, especially cane rats and mice, and is most common near rivers and wetter woodland where its grassland prey is plentiful.

How to identify it

All-dark eagle with a tall floppy crest and, in flight, big white 'windows' in the wings.

Listen for its call

Noisy and shrill - a repeated 'keee-ah' and 'kik-kik-kik' in flight.

Where to see it in Kruger

Moist woodland edges and riverine areas, typically perched on a roadside pole or tree watching for rodents.
