A ground-roosting owl of marshy grassland that is often active before dark, floating low over the veld on long wings. It hunts rodents, insects and small birds, and when disturbed flushes from the grass with a soft, frog-like croak. Its plain brown plumage and dark eyes are distinctive.

Damp grassland and vleis, roosting on the ground in grass and hunting low over open country.
