Natal Spurfowl

Natalse Fisant · Pternistis natalensis

A stocky brown game bird finely speckled and barred all over, with a red bill and reddish legs armed with sharp spurs. It is shy and stays close to cover, dashing into bushes when disturbed. At dusk it gives a raucous, screeching call. It feeds by digging and scratching for bulbs, roots, seeds, and insects.

How to identify it

Mottled brown body with a red bill and orange-red legs, lurking close to thick cover.

Listen for its call

A harsh, screeching cackle that sounds alarmed and out of control.

Where to see it in Kruger

Common in riverine thickets and dense bush, especially in the southern and central park, often near water.
