A slender, elegant little antelope, bright rufous above and white below, standing tall on long legs in open grassland. The male carries short straight horns; both sexes show a black scent-gland patch below the ear. It freezes, then bounds away in a distinctive stiff-legged run.

How to identify it

Long-necked and dainty in open grass; a black bare patch under each ear and a short black-tipped tail.

Look for its tracks

Small slim cloven hoof with pointed halves; like a large steenbok's, on open northern grassland — uncommon.

Where to see it in Kruger

Very localised — the open sourveld grasslands around Pretoriuskop in the south-west.

Did you know
