Scarlet-chested Sunbird

A large, robust sunbird, the male blackish with a blazing scarlet chest and a shimmering green crown and throat. The female is dull and mottled brown. It is bold and noisy, defending flowering trees and aloes and chasing off rivals while feeding on nectar and insects. The loud, ringing song is often delivered from a high perch.

How to identify it

Velvety-black male with a brilliant scarlet chest and a glittering green forehead and throat; female is heavily mottled dark.

Listen for its call

Loud ringing "cheup-cheup-cheup" whistles.

Where to see it in Kruger

Resident in woodland and gardens park-wide, often at flowering trees and aloes, calling loudly from an exposed perch.
