A pioneer tree of deep sandy soils, common on the granite sandveld. Its silvery leaves catch the light and make it easy to spot from a distance.

How to identify it

Silvery blue-green leaves crowded in rosettes at the branch tips, giving the tree a shimmering look. Branches grow in flat, layered tiers. Pinkish-purple papery winged pods. Grows on sandy soils.

Elephant and giraffe browse the leaves and branches; kudu and other antelope eat the leaves.

Where to see it in Kruger

Common on deep sandy soils over granite in the western and northern parts of the park, and on sandveld.
