A diving duck that swims low and slips underwater to feed on water plants. The male is dark brown to black with striking red eyes and a bluish bill, while the female is plainer brown with a white facial crescent. It favours deeper open water, so look for it well out on bigger dams.

Prefers deeper, open dams and large pans where it can dive for food.
