Waterbuck

Waterbok · Kobus ellipsiprymnus

The waterbuck is a large, shaggy grey-brown antelope that never strays far from water. Its most famous feature is a bright white ring on its rump that looks just like a target. Only the bulls grow the long, forward-curving ridged horns. They have a slightly oily, smelly coat that may help waterproof them and put off some predators.

How to identify it

Look for the unmistakable white ring around the rump, like a painted toilet-seat target, unique among antelope.

Look for its tracks

Big, long cloven hoof with splayed halves; chunky and rounded — found near water, larger than kudu's.

Where to see it in Kruger

Always near rivers, dams and pans across the park, grazing on grass close to the water's edge.

Did you know

The white ring on a waterbuck's bottom looks exactly like someone sat on a freshly painted toilet seat.
