White Rhinoceros

Witrenoster · Ceratotherium simum

A massive grazer with two horns and a broad, square upper lip perfect for cropping grass close to the ground. White rhinos are the larger of Africa's two rhino species and are generally calm and social, often seen in small groups. They spend much of the day grazing on open grassland and wallowing in mud to stay cool.

How to identify it

Its wide, square lip and the big hump on its neck tell it apart from the pointy-lipped black rhino.

Look for its tracks

Big three-toed print like a clover or peace sign; broad and round — wider than a dinner plate.

Where to see it in Kruger

Prefers open grassy areas in the southern park; the bushveld around Pretoriuskop and Lower Sabie is good for sightings.

Did you know

The name 'white' comes from a misheard Dutch word for 'wide', describing its broad grass-grazing lip, not its colour.
