Abdim's Stork

A small, sociable stork that visits Kruger in summer, arriving with the rains from further north in Africa. Glossy black with a white belly, it gathers in big flocks to feed on locusts, caterpillars and other insects flushed by storms or grass fires. It leaves before winter.

How to identify it

Smaller than the Black Stork with grey legs, a blue-grey bill and a patch of bare blue-and-red skin on the face.

Where to see it in Kruger

Seen in large flocks on open grassland and burnt areas during summer, often striding after insects.
