Africa's most powerful eagle, built with massive feet and short broad wings for hunting inside the forest canopy. The Crowned Eagle ambushes monkeys, dassies and small antelope, and pairs perform spectacular tumbling display flights high above their riverside woodland territories.

How to identify it

Powerful eagle with boldly barred underwings and 'trousers'; broader-winged and more heavily marked than the Martial Eagle.

Listen for its call

A loud, ringing 'kewee-kewee-kewee' as it circles high - carries for miles.

Where to see it in Kruger

Tall riverine and dense woodland, especially along the southern rivers where it hunts monkeys and dassies.

Did you know
