A common dry-land kingfisher with a streaky brown hood, rich red bill and bright blue wings and rump. It does not fish for a living; instead it watches from a low branch and pounces on insects, lizards and small snakes on the ground. Present all year, it is often seen perched openly around camps.

How to identify it

A bush kingfisher with a streaky brown head, all-red bill and blue wings and rump, found dry-land away from water.

Listen for its call

A loud, whistled 'ki-ti-ti-ti' that drops away down the scale.

Where to see it in Kruger

Perches in bushveld and woodland park-wide, including around rest camps, usually away from water.
