Birds Vultures Uncommon

Lappet-faced Vulture

Swartaasvoël · Torgos tracheliotos

The biggest, most powerful vulture in Africa, with a wingspan as wide as a car is long. Its bare pink head has folds of skin called lappets hanging down the sides. This bird is so strong it can tear open tough hides that other vultures cannot, often opening a carcass so the smaller vultures can finally feed.
