Lesser Spotted Eagle

A migratory brown eagle that breeds in eastern Europe and arrives in Kruger for the southern summer. Less powerful than the resident eagles, it often walks on the ground hunting frogs, termites and small reptiles, and can appear in numbers when food is suddenly abundant after rain.

How to identify it

Smallish dark-brown eagle with feathered legs and a pale patch on the upperwing; smaller-billed and neater than the Tawny Eagle.

Where to see it in Kruger

A summer visitor to open woodland and grassland, often in loose groups feeding on insects and small prey.
