White-faced Whistling Duck

A tall, goose-like duck that stands upright and whistles instead of quacking. Its bright white face and throat stand out against a chestnut breast and finely barred sides. Highly sociable, it rests in noisy flocks by day and feeds on seeds and water plants, often in the cool of evening.

How to identify it

An upright, long-necked duck with a clean white face and throat over a chestnut chest and black-and-grey barred flanks.

Listen for its call

A clear, three-note whistle 'swee-swee-sweeoo', often from passing flocks at night.

Gathers in flocks on open dams, pans and river sandbars across the park.
