African Mourning Dove

A collared dove resembling the Cape Turtle Dove but with a distinctive pale eye ringed by red skin and a more drawn-out call. It is tied to tall trees along the larger rivers, mainly in the northern park, where it feeds on seeds and stays present year-round.

How to identify it

Like Cape Turtle Dove but with a pale-yellow eye set in red bare skin; favours big riverside trees.

Listen for its call

Soft cooing with a drawn-out, nasal "currr" at the end.

Where to see it in Kruger

Big trees along the major rivers, mainly in the northern half.
