A woodland and forest hawk that hunts by surprise, dashing through the trees after birds, lizards and small mammals. Shy and easily missed, it often reveals itself with a steady ticking call given during a high circling flight at first light over its leafy territory.

How to identify it

Forest hawk with finely barred underparts; larger than the sparrowhawks, often detected by its repeated 'chip' call given high in display flight.

Listen for its call

Listen at dawn for a sharp, evenly-spaced 'krik... krik... krik' high overhead.

Where to see it in Kruger

Riverine forest and dense woodland, hunting quietly inside the canopy for birds and reptiles.
